Chapter Five

After our meeting with the king, one of the guards escorted us to two rooms on an upper floor, situated next door to each other. I was alone in mine, lying on the gigantic four-poster bed and staring at the ceiling, when there was a sharp knock on the bedroom door.

“Just a sec!” I jumped off the bed and crossed the large, spacious room. It was probably Drew, although knocking would be a first.

After I had told the king that I’d stay in the realm for three days, Drew had been uncharacteristically quiet. I’d expected him to argue or at the very least try to talk me out of staying, but he did neither. He just withdrew into himself. I’d never seen him act that way before. It was weird and unsettling. I asked him to give Anwen my apologies when she escorted him back to Miami, but at that request, Drew had dug in his heels. He’d been quick to remind me that we were partners and said that whether I liked it or not, he was staying in the underwater realm for as long as I was. I didn’t think I could have changed his mind so I didn’t bother trying. In the end, we’d found Anwen’s brother and asked him to get a message to his sister on our behalf to tell her we were staying at the palace for a few days and we’d find our own way back.

When I swung open the bedroom door, it wasn’t Drew on the other side. An honest to goodness footman greeted me—at least he looked like a footman, except for the fact that he was dressed head to toe in white. Pale blond hair crowned his head like a halo and when added to the white clothes, it gave him an angelic appearance. He nodded hello then pushed a long, white box tied with white, satin ribbon into my hands. On top of the box lay a single white rose.

“From his majesty,” the young boy said with another courteous nod.

Before I could even think to question him about what was inside the box, he’d already turned and had begun making his way back along the corridor. I shrugged. He probably wouldn’t have been privy to that information anyway. I held the box at arm’s length as I closed the door then walked back to the bed. I laid it down and stared at it for a while as if I was waiting for it to unwrap itself. When it occurred to me that it clearly wasn’t going to do that, I untied the ribbon and pulled off the lid.

Whatever was inside had been carefully wrapped in delicate, white tissue paper. I moved it aside and frowned at what I’d uncovered. It was a dress—a white dress. I lifted the soft fabric out of the box then placed it on the bed, staring at it with wide-eyed wonder. Made entirely of silk, the floor-length gown was beautiful without a doubt, but it looked suspiciously like a wedding dress.
